How to associate with the more confused members of a nursing home?
I volunteer at the nursing home, and one of my jobs is talking one-on-one with the residents. But, I’m assigned to the group of people who are like, confused. Dementia, I assumed, though I cannot confirm it.
I’m no doctor or psychologist, and the lady in charge doesn’t have much advice to give.
How do you talk to people like these? I really want to bond with these people.
Your manner and facial expressions make a big difference. Act as if you’re comfortable, even if you aren’t at first. Smile, look them in the face when you speak to them. Speak slowly and clearly…simple sentences. Whenever they mention a person or show interest in something, go along with it, as in “tell me about Sarah”, or “I like to play cards, do you?”
The website below has some good ideas as well. And thanks for what you do. Many of us will be there one day, hopefully with someone who cares.

My Friend has lived in a rental unit for 16 years. Can she get her deposit back? She is a senior and needs the?
As long as there is nothing wrong except normal wear and tear. In 16 years you can expect the place is going to need paint and the carpet will show obvious wear. If she leaves it clean, save normal wear and tear (no dirt is normal), and the deposit was not spent during those 16 years on things she damaged along the way, she should receive it back in full. Some states will even include some interest (not a lot).
