Can you get sent to a mental hospital for extreme anxiety?
i am 20 years old and i suffer from extreme anxiety problems and hallucinations i am not suicidal and the voices don’t tell me to hurt myself but my anxiety is to the point i dont like to leave my house could they put me in a mental hospital for this and if so is it the same section as the suicidal people
As long as you’re being honest and are NOT suicidal … and as long as you are NOT homicidal, don’t rush to the conclusion you need to hospitalized just yet. But if you do think you’ll hurt yourself or someone else, call 911 and tell them that.
Anxiety disorders are a common and they make you FEEL horrible but most people can get effective treatment w/out needing to be hospitalized (will explain further below).
… First though, I’m unsure if you hear voices or not based on how you phrased your first sentence. You said “The voices don’t tell me to hurt myself … “. If you hear voices at all, you will need help w/that, as well as your anxiety problem. Again, hospitalization isn’t necessarily what’s needed.
Your first plan of action is to set up an appointment to see a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist can help identify the exact nature of your problem, and if needed, can offer you medications that could greatly help your symptoms. The vast majority of anxiety sufferers find ways to function w/out being checked into a mental hospital.
Can tell you now that since your anxiety is now keeping you home-bound, you likely suffer from agoraphobia. That is something that you can get A LOT of help with too, even if it seems kind of hopeless right now.
After you’ve seen the psychiatrist for an evaluation, there is one very specific therapy modality that specifically targets anxiety disorders called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Decades of empirical studies show it is the most affective therapy available for anxiety. In many cases it works just as well as anti-anxiety medicines.
Keep your chin up. I know this is Hell because I’ve suffered from this too. Wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Just take the steps I mentioned, even if you think you won’t or can’t get better. Find a psychiatrist and go from there.
All the best to you.
