Do not do the following things while installing the slate roof
- Never walk on the slate roof when you are installing it.
- The length of the headlap should not be less than 3 inches
- Never use electrogalvanized nails to install slate roof. Instead of this you can use copper or stainless steel nails for slate roof installation.
- Aluminium drip edges are not recommended to make slate roofs. These are made for asphalt shingle roofs. For slate roof use copper or stainless steel aprons.
- Never pick the slate on the basis of color and pattern. Always look for quality, thickness, weight and other properties.
- Slate roof tiles of 3/16″ to 1/4″ should not have drilled holes. These should have punched holes in the slate tiles.
- Never think that underlayment will work as water resistant. It works till the slate roof installation. To make slate roof a water proof you will have to install it properly.
- Use of laminated wood roof decking is not recommended for slate roof. Instead of this use solid lumbar.
- Never install the loosen fascia. All the ends must be completely nailed.
- Never work on assumptions while installing slate roof. Always draw horizontal lines taking correct dimensions to install each row of slate tile.
- Never use cement or caulk to fix the slate. This will make the repair job difficult if required in future. Copper or stainless steel nails will perfectly install the slate roof.
- Never start installing slate roof without prior knowledge.
- Do not punch the holes in slate while installing. Make the holes before installation.
- Put your starter slate with back side up
- Neither use too many or too less number of nails.
